According to Sanders.

Lying only gives you more to keep mental track of, and can chip away at the trust in your relationship if truth is discovered.

So often the anxiety (or even inappropriate guilt) that comes with saying NO is so strong that there is a temptation to lie or stretch the truth to “ease” the pain of giving or receiving a no.

Sander’s List (I may throw my own in here)

  1. It is important to hold on to the fact that you do not need to validate your reason for saying no.
  2. * You don’t need a “reason” to say no other than you do not want to.
  3. * You can simply deliver a “no” and it counts as a full response.
  4. Thank you for thinking of me; unfortunately I won’t be joining you this time around.
  5. I can’t do that. I am able to do _____however.
  6. I hate disappointing you but I won’t be able to make that happen.
  7. I am not able to take that on right now; I am already maxed out.
  8. That doesn’t interest me but I definitely want to hear about the fun you have
  9. That makes me uncomfortable, Id rather not.
  10. I am not able to add anything to my calendar this month
  11. Thanks for including me but that’s not really my thing.
  12. I know this is a big need, it’s hard for me to say I can’t contribute right now.
  13. While it sounds like fun and I sincerely appreciate the offer I am not able to join this time around.
  14. I’m not up for that tonight; I am open to considering next week though.

Remember, you can say no simply because you don’t want to, and that’s that.

Sanders also points out by saying “Yes” too much, it can lead to resentment, and feeling used.

15. When you don’t have the energy, time or resources to say yes.

16. When you don’t feel good.

17. Saying yes isn’t in alignment with your values.

18. You know you’re not the right person for the job.

19. You’ve said yes before and didn’t go well.

20. You need to set or hold a boundary with the person making the request.
