Are You Stuck In Modern Culture’s “Means Goals” Trap?

Are you stuck in a “means goal” trap? After watching this video, you can decide that for yourself.

Means goals: Are the things society thinks we need to have in place to be happy.

End goals: The end results of being human. Experiencing love, learning a new language, traveling around the world, etc.

Do you wake at the age of 40 (or your age now), and hate your career?Vishen says the reasons for this? Because we were pressured to pick a career before we were allowed to drink beer. In our younger years, we think the “means” goals is really an “ends” goals. Do you think you need to work work work to afford the money to do the things that make you happy ?He basically says by shifting our focus, we won’t end up questioning our decisions at age 40 (or 50 or 60).

For example, we think that obtaining a certain GPA, dating a certain someone, getting in a certain social circle, or getting a certain position will ultimately lead to happiness, and that’s not necessarily the case.

We get so obsessed with the “means’ goals, that we lose site of the “ends goals.”

Vishen explains his example in the video. Here’s my quick example.

During my grade school years, I used to think that getting into my dream college would lead to happiness.

I found out after the first semester, it’s not what it was cracked up to be. Now, some would say it’s what you make it. Sure. I don’t disagree with that. However. I ran into too many people with prejudices, and stereotypes, and it didn’t sit well with me. I ran into way too many people that did not embrace female leadership, and ran into way too many people that “had a place” for me. It rubbed me the wrong way.

He says happiness involves experiences, growth and contribution.

The three important questions Vishen says we should ask ourselves:

  1. What do I want to experience out of life?
  2. How do I want to grow?
  3. What do I want to contribute to the planet?

We don’t measure our worth over the money in our bank accounts, however we can say that we lived life based on the experiences that money can buy.

Ah the video is so good, just go watch it.
