My friends used to always say that. Like many people, they don’t want to lose their jobs, and don’t want to affect their future chances of getting a job.
Just like this article was saying, there’s many people that play beer pong like you. There’s millions of people that drink and hang out with friends just like you. There is so much more that you need to worry about. Companies like Fama provide employers with the ability to zero in certain benchmarks when scanning a potential future employee. Yes, they know that you like to drink with your friends on weekends lol.
Fama did a case study on 15,000 American employees in early 2016. They found the appearance of alcohol on a person’s social accounts had little to no effect on their job performance. Why? So many people have alcohol on their social accounts that using it as a data point in the screening process can be counterproductive because you’d end up screening almost everyone out.-J.T. O’Donnell
Here’s What You Should Worry About Instead Of “Cocktail” or “Beer” posts.
- Posting racist comments on social media.
- If you try to hide sketchy details about your life? They tap into their own network of contacts and find someone who worked with you to get an unbiased view about you.
- Posting statuses of you smoking illegal drugs is not the best idea either.
- Liking racist or “druggie” comments. So people, don’t get mad at your friends/family for not liking posts! Especially if it’s a “dicey” post with curse words to rival a sailor, they might not “like” it to project their job and reputation. Employers are watching that. In general Fama suggests that you be careful what you like or endorse on social media. By liking it’s suggesting that you apart of that crowd.
- Liking or posting content during business hours suggests that you aren’t doing your work at your job.
- Don’t assume that great yearly reviews equals job security. Those are just recognition for what you’ve been paid to do. On any given day, the rules can change and the company can decide for ANY REASON they don’t want to keep you. Heard of those people who were loyal employees for 10+years and fired for whatever reason? It happens. A good performance track record won’t save you from getting fired or laid off.
- Talking bad about former employers and ex-co workers suggests that you don’t have great judgment or you can’t be trusted. If you haven’t explained honestly why you left your last job, it could be seen as suspicious and you may not get a job offer.
- They are looking you up online all the time (without telling you) doing free internet searches.. If you have anything in your past that’s questionable, they will find in. In other words, if you are going to post a beer/cocktail post, no one cares about the cups in your hand. Don’t post pictures of you puking everywhere or doing “hangover” crazy stuff. To date, none of my friends’ photos or videos can rival “Hangover 2” lol.
What will earn you “brownie points”
- Volunteering and participating in the community will gain you brownie points.
- Want to keep your job? Want to leave a good impression at a job interview? Don’t complain or fuss. Those who have a history of constantly complaining to management on the job are the first on the list to get fired. While skills and productivity matter, personality is at the top of the list.
- You can even follow up by tweeting or sharing your current jobs/potential job’s social media and adding something of value on their feeds. This will show that you are a helpful resource and that they are a priority.
- A professional personalized thank you note will show that you value their time and show appreciation. A follow up thank you card is a) great manners and b) move you higher up. A thank you card is a great opportunity for you to show your potential company that they are on top of the priority list for you.
So these won’t cause as much damage as you think huh? Poor babies, been blamed for so much.
